Recommended book: "Ill Fares the Land" by Tony Judt
Tim Rutten of the Los Angeles Times wrote a review of the book “Ill Fares the Land” by Tony Judt in March, 2010 and later in August, 2010, after the death of Tony Judt, an appreciation of his life. Rutten wrote, “The late historian spoke out on the issues of the day with a clear and calm veracity that will be missed in today’s partisan landscape. What follows are excerpts from those articles.

In the latest issue of London Review of Books, Judy tells an interviewer, “I think what we need is a return to a belief not in liberty, because that is easily converted into something else . . .but in equality. Equality, which is not the same as sameness. Equality of access to information, equality of access to knowledge, equality of access to education, equality of access to power and to politics . . .It is another way of talking about injustice. We need to rediscover a language of dissent. It can’t be an economic language since part of the problem is that we have for too long spoken about politics in an economic language where everything has been about growth, efficiency, productivity and wealth, and not enough has been about collective ideals around which we can gather . . .around which we can be motivated collectively, whether on the issue of justice, inequality, cruelty or unethical behavior. We have thrown away the language with which to do that.”

Where is that to be found? It says something of the author’s capacious intelligence that, in the concluding chapter of “Ill Fares the Land,” he quotes Edmund Burke’s belief that society is “a partnership not only between those who are living, but between those who are living, those who are dead, and those who are to be born.”

Bodhi News Part 3: FUTURE OF THE BODHI TREE BOOKSTORE
The Bodhi Tree Bookstore is undergoing a transition. Sales for the Bodhi Tree Bookstore have been declining for more than a decade. In the last two years, sales have been drastically low and the Bodhi Tree Bookstore has been operating at a loss. Looking for ways to provide financial relief, we entered into an agreement to sell the buildings and property, but not the bookstore, with a closing date of November 28, 2011. The bookstore closed to business on December 31, 2011.

The business is in the process of being sold to a new owner who plans to continue the legacy of the bookstore in an expanded visionary form. All the pictures, bookshelfs, show cases and other furniture are now in tempoary storage. To keep informed, visit our website www.bodhitree.com and our facebook page.

Bodhi News Part 4: BODHI TREE BOOKSTORE ONLINE
Early in July, we revitalized the Bodhi Tree web site. There are additional lecture presentations, information lists, new photo galleries, annotations, and a Guest Book. In addition the home page has been changed. The Bodhi Tree Bookstore E-Commerce has been temporarily discontinued since the stroe closed in December 2011. However, other features of the website may be visited and appreciated. Look for the link to our extensive Health & Wellness Products companion website featuring an extensive array of products for health, home, workplace, exercise and recreation.

When you click on the "Health & Wellness" button, it opens to an extensive selection of over 14,000 health and wellness products: everything from vitamins and herbal supplements to homeopathy, aromatherapy, personal care and natural cruelty-free cosmetics (and much more). Our "Health & Wellness" store ships to you within one business day. The site and fulfillment is managed on our behalf by "Your Body Naturally", with all shipments and billing originating in Wisconsin.

Conversations Under the Bodhi Tree was a radio interview show hosted by Jo Carey and aired as a segment of the Mystic Radio with Rhobbin Alexis program. The interviews by Jo Carey have been discontinued, however, the archived Bodhi Tree interviews can be heard by accessing the "Conversations Under the Bodhi Tree" web page on Bodhi Tree Online www.bodhitree.com.

Where to park near the Bodhi Tree Bookstore

WHERE TO PARK NEAR THE BODHI TREE BOOKSTORE:

Friends of the Bodhi Tree,
One of the most common problems of life in Los Angeles is finding a parking space. Here's a guide that we hope will make it easier for you to park and help you avoid getting a parking ticket when visiting the Bodhi Tree Bookstore in West Hollywood. Park cautiously and feel free to ask us where and when you may park.

The Bodhi Tree Bookstore has three customer parking spaces in front of the former Used Book building on Westbourne Avenue. Metered street parking is generally available. In addition, there are two parking structures ( Pacific Design Center and West Hollywood park/Library Parking Structure), and Valet parking. See below for details.

VALET PARKING:
The City of West Hollywood, the Urth Caffé, the Bodhi Tree Bookstore and other local merchants have a community valet parking program.
The pick-up area is in front of the Bodhi Tree Annex building at 8583 Melrose Avenue.
The cost is $5.00 and it is in operation from 10:30 am to 11 pm.
Consider using valet parking the next time you want to visit not only the Bodhi Tree Bookstore but also Kitson, Waterworks and Mansour across the street, followed by a visit to Soolip for some beautiful paper. There are many interesting stores in the area. Finally, before heading home, you can relax with a wonderful "caffé" at Urth or Le Pain Quotidien. Through valet parking, you may "forget" about your car for long time.

How to park for free: The Bodhi Tree Bookstore offers a "help you park" program. We will reimburse or credit the basic Valet fee ($5.00) for a minimum purchase of $15.00.

PACIFIC DESIGN CENTER PARKING STRUCTURE:
The parking garage entrance for Pacific Design Center is located on Melrose Avenue, just east of San Vicente Boulevard. First 20 minutes free, $1.50 each 15 minutes thereafter. $13.50 maximum weekdays. $6 flat rate after 6 pm Monday through Wednesday; $9 flat rate after 6 pm Thursday; $10 flat rate after 6 pm Froday and Saturday. $7 flat rate 10 am-6 pm saturday and all day Sunday. All rates subject to change.

WEST HOLLYWOOD PARK/LIBRARY PARKING STRUCTURE (333 Spaces):
This is NEW!!!! This parking structure opened in March 2011. Temporary entrance is on Robertson Blvd. just north of Melrose Avenue. All rates subject to change.
8 am to 6 pm Daily: First hour is free; One additional hour free with park validation; thereafter $1 each 20 minutes; $12 maximum.
6 pm to 2 am Sunday through Wednesday: $1 each 20 minutes; $6 maximum.
6 pm to 2 am Thursday: $1 each 20 minutes; $8 maximum.
6 pm to 2 am Friday and Saturday: $10 flat rate; Two hours free parking for park visitor's with validation.

  WHERE YOU CAN ALWAYS PARK:

The Bodhi Tree has three off-street parking spaces near the front of the Used Book Branch on Westbourne Drive.
Parking Meters: You may park anytime wherever there is a parking meter (this includes Melrose Ave. and on side streets as well). You must pay the meter from 8:00 am-6:00 pm. The maximum time allowed is two hours.
Meters only take quarters: 25 cents for 20 minutes.
The meters are free after 6:00 pm (some go to 8 pm, check the signs) and all day on Sundays.
Forty-one metered spaces (angled parking) are available on Melrose Avenue west of the Bodhi Tree (in front of, and further west of, the Pacific Design Center).

WHERE YOU CAN PARK MOST OF THE TIME:

The side streets south of Melrose-west side: Two-hour free parking is available south of Melrose on the west side of the side streets (towards the Beverly Center) Monday through Saturday from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm. There is no parking in this area after 7:00 pm. every night and all day on Sundays.

The Pacific Design Center parking lot is at the the corner of Melrose Ave. and San Vicente Blvd., just 1-1/2 blocks west of the Bodhi Tree. Because of construction or the Red Building, the San Vicente Blvd is closed. The designated entrance is on Melrose Avenue, just east of San Vicente Boulevard. See above for rates.

The West Hollywood Park/Library Parking Structure is located near the corner of San Vicente Blvd. and Melrose Avenue. Temporary entrance is on robertson Blvd just north of Melrose Avenue. See above for rates.

WHERE YOU CAN NEVER PARK:

The side streets north of Melrose: No parking is allowed at any time in the area north of Melrose (towards Santa Monica Blvd.), except at any parking meter.
The side streets south of Melrose-east side: The area south of Melrose is a different permit area with different rules. There is no parking at any time on the east side of the street. Parking is allowed at times on the west side of the street (see WHERE YOU CAN PARK MOST OF THE TIME).

Please don't be discouraged-there's usually enough parking available most of the time in the areas listed above.

HANDICAP PARKING:

The Bodhi Tree Bookstore provides handicap parking in a rear, employee parking area. Access is from Westbourne Avenue. Drive up the driveway between the New Book and Used Book Branch buildings. A Bodhi Tree Staff person will open the access gate.
