IT A LISTEN!! – MUSIC TO INSPIRE YOUR HEART, MIND AND SOUL The
Bodhi Tree carries several thousand musical titles (mostly on CD), with new
selections arriving every week. You can find music for meditation,
relaxation, massage, yoga, etc., along with many other exciting recordings
from around the world – spiritually inspired music for the rest of the day.
Here are some of our recent favorites, chosen with much assistance from our
music buyer, Harmony who has made great new selections for our collection. Some
of the notes below are dated, look at the Advanced Search page of the website
in the Music Area and look at any category and see what are the bestsellers. This is up-to-date and fully functional as
of December 2005. DREAM
CHANTS – SOOTHING GREGORIAN & SANSKRIT CHANTS FOR RELAXATION &
MEDITATION.
Cynthia Snodgrass, vocals, with Jim Oliver, keyboards. Sacred chant is more
that music – it is sung prayer. The power of sacred chant to calm, to soothe,
and to bring the listener into the presence of the divine is celebrated in
spiritual traditions around the world. Here, two sacred traditions are
merged. Favorite Gregorian chants from the West and beloved Sanskrit chants
from the East are woven together to assist in the deepening of relaxation,
meditation, and prayer. Cynthia Snodgrass has a lovely voice, and sings
beautifully, while Jim Oliver’s arrangements are celestial. If you don’t
believe in heaven already, you may change your mind after listening to this
disc. Cynthia Snodgrass is an Episcopal priest and a hospice chaplain; her
singing conveys a feeling of sacred peace and consolation. So, this music
might be very helpful for anyone who was ill, troubled, or even dying, as
well as those who simply want to meditate or relax. ($15.98. CD. ISBN
9990444072.) UNFOLDING
– A TRANS-GLOBAL EXPLORATION OF OMAR KHAYYAM’S MYSTIC VISION. By Axiom of Choice. This
one was a real discovery. Our music buyer, Kim, describes it as “upbeat
Persian trance.” This is music that will shake you out of your doldrums and
very possibly have you up on your feet, shouting and clapping your hands.
There are hypnotic rhythms and some ecstatic singing that will make your hair
stand on end; there are also some trippy instrumental passages played on an
electric cello (with fuzz, apparently.) Overall, the disc offers an
interesting variety of moods, played on the kamancheh, the diwan, the duduk
and the zurna – in other words, some exotic sounds along with tasteful
ambient guitar and some very fine tabla playing. This is inspired and
inspiring music, with tracks such as “Mystics and Fools,” “Ancient Sky,”
“Color of Dreams,” and “Messenger of Time.” Tom Schnabel of KCRW had this to
say: “Unfolding reflects our search for life’s deeper meaning, and offers the
vehicle of music to smooth the way. The music celebrates the poetical pursuit
of knowledge and freedom; it is about seeking, beauty, and above all, love.”
The reviewer intended to check out a few tracks on a Saturday evening . . .
and listened to the entire disc, straight through. This one pulls you in.
($15.98. CD 9990440360. Narada) NADI. Susumu Ueda. “Nadi”
means a big river, such as the holy river Ganges in India. It also refers to
the pathways in the body that energy follows during yoga. This could be music
to get the energy flowing during a party, or just some fascinating sounds to
liven up an evening. While the artists are Japanese, the music is played on
the Indian sitar and bansuri (bamboo flute), surrounded with entrancing atmospheres
on a synthesizer and backed with some driving rhythms. In Susuma Ueda’s own
words, “The songs reach to the bottom of people’s hearts, remain in their
memories and rouse rich images, and listeners can be wrapped in comfortable
sounds.” Indian music played by Japanese artists? Sounds unusual, but it
works. Susuma Ueda is a very interesting composer; he also created the
official song, “Winter Flame” for the Nagano Olympics. ($16.98. CD. ISBN
9990451001. Pacific Moon). These are just a few of the new titles we get in every week. Come and listen, we have most of the CDs available for listening.
