At the forefront of the 1970s spiritual revolution in Los Angeles was a bookstore, a small epicenter named Bodhi Tree. In 1983, after actress Shirley MacLaine’s memoir Out on a Limb brought international attention to Bodhi Tree, the store expanded, adding a dedicated event space that hosted Bodhi Talks—readings, interviews and lectures by scientists, philosophers, teachers, healers and authors who shared their wisdom, expertise and newly published books.

Over the decades, hundreds of Bodhi Talks took place on many topics, among them: Philosopher and author Jacob Needleman examined the role of government, urging us to inquire more deeply into our American origins. Buddhist scholar Franz Metcalf addressed approaching modern questions through the ancient words of the Buddha. Dr. Joan Borysenko, co-founder and former director of the Mind/Body Clinic at Harvard Medical School, lectured on understanding the feminine life cycle. Spiritual author Marianne Williamson addressed love and forgiveness. Mystic Terence McKenna revealed the importance of hallucinogens in his spiritual development. The list goes on and on.

The Beauty of Bodhi Talks

Because the Melrose Avenue bookstore was small and familial, the messages in these Talks were uniquely intimate. They’re also as relevant today as they were back then. The Talks, which continued until the brick-and-mortar store closed in 2011, turned into real community events, with participants being introduced to new ways of thinking, which was the essence of what Bodhi Tree offered.
