A hand-stitched indigo khadi cotton double/full quilt
This khadi cotton quilt is made of meticulous, precise and extensive hand stitching, combined with hand-dyed indigo fabrics and threads to produce a one-of-a kind piece. Its beauty is found not only in the design, but also in the texture. We think it will add a soulful touch to any home-sanctuary space.
Known as rural kheta stitching, the Bangladesh women who create these quilts share their life’s stories in the patterns. This centuries-old tradition creates a texture known as dheu, which creates a wave or ripple effect that mimics the movement of water, making each piece truly unique. The maker combines Bengal tradition and Japanese methods of stitching and dying, experimenting with both culture’s methods to create something special. Bangladesh is one of the most significant producers of indigo in the world. The indigotin content used in this quilt is defined as true indigo, produced in the northern region of the country, and is the highest quality and concentration available in the area. The indigo initiative is a sustainable, renewable resource that uses existing microbiology and boosts local agriculture. Measures 91″x 71″.
Deeply steeped in tradition, Living Blue is a brand with a mission. Its mostly indigo-color quilts and scarves are handcrafted by a women’s artist collective in rural Bangladesh, whose art is based on centuries-old methods and traditions, with a slightly modern touch. They often spend up to a year intensely stitching a pattern into a quilt, using designs and motifs that express the joys and sorrows that the women and their families experience in life. And their work yields not only a high-quality, soon-to-be heirloom for a collector, but also profits that help facilitate fair wages, a democratically organized and managed business, and health and wellness camps within the artisans’ communities.
