Hand-thrown ceramic pot
Hand-thrown pottery has an elemental, earthy appeal, and a tactile connection to the history of craft. We love that the versatility of the putty color means it will fit into any room’s décor. Use with cut flowers or dried leaves—nature’s own ornaments.
Pottery links us to the earth and to the ancient traditions of handmade vessels. The craft originated before the Neolithic period and spread from China to Russia to Sub-Saharan Africa. The earliest technique was rudimentary: Coils of clay were built up from a circular base, the sides were smoothed and thinned by hand, and then the piece was heated in a kiln. By 3000 BC, potters in Mesopotamia began using the first simple revolving wheel; it was also in Mesopotamia that glaze first came into use. Applied to a pot, then fired, the glaze created a seal and added shine and color, transforming basic clay into a ceramic vessel of great beauty, like this ceramic pot from HomArt.
Serenity, simplicity, and warmth—these qualities resonate throughout HomArt’s collection of objects and furnishings. Sustainability is also at the heart of the California company’s approach to decor. Some of its one-of-a-kind products are discovered on antiquing trips around the world, at Indian souks, Asian bazaars and European flea markets. Others are crafted from recycled materials by artists who transform abandoned materials into new decorative objects with a timeless charm.
