Hanauer, who published the first edition of this collection of folktales in 1907, spent his life in the Holy Land, where he was a Protestant canon. The volume contains a great number of richly detailed stories, which are divided into themes that include creation, miracles, saints, sinners, legends, animal lore, plant lore, and magic cures.
