A beaded one-inch wide suede bracelet with disk and tassels from Maasai craftswomen
This disk is made of tiny white beads, flanked by rows of larger beads on this suede strap bracelet. We love the soft leather lace closure and the adjustable sterling silver fastening. A work of art, but also an empowering piece of jewelry that is strong and pretty at the same time.
Inspired by the jewelry worn by the Sipolio warriors (the junior warriors in the Massai tribe), the makers of this bracelet have combined a contemporary aesthetic with traditional Massai customs. The glass beads are intricately joined using thread salvaged from old grain bags. Like everything Sidai Designs crafts, this bracelet has helps preserve the cultural identity and beading traditions of the Maasai tribe and creates sustainable incomes for urban Maasai women.
Sidai means good or beautiful in the Maasai tribal language, Maa. Sidai Designs is a socially driven enterprise with a workshop based in Arusha in Northern Tanzania that employs more than 50 Maasai women. The company creates contemporary luxury beaded jewelry, based on traditional Maasai beading techniques and artistry. Founded in 2011 as a non-profit, Sidai Designs supports Tanzanian Maasai women by providing economic empowerment, fair wages and by using fair trade practices. Sidai Designs is passionate in its mission to overcome poverty and improve women’s social standing; it also provides tremendous hope and a sense of purpose.
