Social scientists, mostly British but also Australian and French, argue that the taken-for-granted shared privileges of living in society are being increasingly dis-remembered, and often actively dismantled, by the current ascendancy of social and political ideologies that celebrate individuality and achievement, as though they can somehow be extracted from their social, political, and economic contexts. But since the 19th century, they say, the call to increase individual freedom has acted to cover up a cruder program to extend the economic freedoms of those who have already amassed significant wealth and privilege.
