A natural palm leaf round basket featuring a colorful stripe and interior, in 20 cm, 25 cm, or 30 cm
Sleek, simple and sturdy, these handcrafted baskets are woven in double layers of natural palm leaf fibers. Ideal for storing earthly treasures or household items, they come in three colors that contrast with the natural fiber shade. They remind us of an open-air market in Mexico and can lend a worldly feel to any home.
Basket weaving is one of the oldest and most popular crafts, since natural materials such as wood, grass and roots can be woven into useful items like mats and containers. Woven goods were also used as artifacts in religious ceremonies and were often traded, which is why we still see basketry at pop-up markets. The oldest known baskets even pre-date archeological finds of Egyptian pottery. Because of their organic look and rustic feel, they have a solid place in modern design as well. Recent innovations have also allowed weavers to experiment with novel shapes, sizes and fibers for use in homes and sanctuaries, bridging ancient and contemporary worlds.
In 2002, Beatriz Carregha founded Makaua, a company that brings together artisans, workers and designers to create handmade palm products for the home, such as placemats, baskets, lampshades, tote bags, rugs and puffs. With a passion and a goal to be “perfectly imperfect” Makaua celebrates the authentic and the different by crafting high-quality items made only from a sustainable natural fiber that grows abundantly in the south of Mexico. Their products join nature, culture and tradition, offering the world much more than just basic products, but a way to connect. Makaua has given hundreds of people in Mexico the opportunity to earn an income and improve their quality of life.
