Hardiman (U. of Warwick) lived for many years in Mahatma Gandhi’s (1869-1948) home region of Gujarat, and has written extensively about Indian history. Here he examines Gandhi’s legacy as the creator and advocate of a radical style of politics that fought the many divisions found in his own and other societies. He argues that the political and religious leader resisted the temptation to polarize sentiment in order to force people either to chose his way or oppose it.
