Joseph Needham (1900-95) distilled years of study into the history of Chinese science and technology into the Science and Civilization in China, publication of which began in 1954. It was a little much for general readers, so three decades later Temple (history and philosophy of science, Tsinghua U., Bejing) distilled the distillation into this single volume of short essays and full-page, full-color illustrations and without footnotes.
