A handcrafted leather trunk, available in four colors, made exclusively for Bodhi Tree
This trunk reminds us of a treasure chest that we’d use to store our most prized possessions. The soft leatheróin natural or dyed vibrant magenta, eggplant or deep indigo blueócomes from sustainably raised goats in Mali, where these are made. In and of itself, a true treasure.
Leather boxes have a long history in the life of the Tuareg nomads: Smaller ones were used to carry valuables during long treks through the Saharan desert, and bigger, more elaborate boxes were and are still given to a bride before her wedding. Drought and unrest in the Tuareg territories eventually forced them to settle elsewhere, and Mali became their home. There, generation after generation of Tuareg people craft these sturdy leather boxes. Today, the community teaches and encourages its young people to preserve and continue this beautiful art form.
In Tamasheq, a language spoken in the West African nation of Mali, timidwa means friendship. Friendship is the foundation of the Association Timidwa, an art collective formed by artisans forced to flee Timbuktu due to unrest. The organization works to preserve traditional craft-making culture and improve the community’s living conditions through profit sharing. Today, 70 craftspeople of different ethnicities and disciplines, half of whom are women, participate. They use locally sourced raw materials to create their goods, which are handmade using fair trade labor practices.
