Interpretation of Dreams

Published in November 1899, Sigmund Freud’s Die Traumdeutung (The Interpretation of Dreams) is one of the foundational works of psychoanalysis. In the work, Freud introduced his theory of the unconscious and its manifestations in people’s dreams. This is an English translation of the work, first published in 1955, that was carried out by psychoanalyst Strachey with the assistance of Anna Freud, the daughter of Sigmund and an important psychoanalytic figure in her own right. This edition is considered by many to be the definitive English edition, incorporating as it does many textual alterations carried out by Freud over the course of 30 years (although this reviewer also recalls some scholarly controversy over Anna’s possible contributions to the amendments).
