More than 60 years after Klaatu’s warning in the movie The Day the World Stood Still (1951) humans are still screwing things up. He offers some inescapable logic: we humans mess up things that are within our reach, like the Earth’s biosphere and climate; ergo, we will mess up the biosphere and climate. The notion that the planet’s surface is sufficiently within our grasp and that we are the dominant force in shaping it now has a name: the Anthropocene.
