Why We Love This

Lighting a smudge stick creates a fragrant smoke that purifies and rebalances the space within a home and within ourselves. The combination of these plant scents is particularly aromatic and inspirational. Smudging becomes a very personal ritual as it allows us to send our prayers, hopes, and dreams into the air with the smoke.

Story

The smudging ritual—in which a bundle of sacred herbs is lit, creating a fragrant smoke that cleanses the air—is a traditional ceremonial practice of the Native Americans, though it has been used among Buddhists and Hindus as well. The smoke is said to bless a space and rebalance one’s life. The smudging herbs themselves have special powers: white sage clears negative energies and awakens the soul; sweetgrass is the “sacred hair of mother earth,” representing love, kindness and honesty; lavender brings protection and calms the mind; and the rose scent bolsters courage and enhances love. Traditionally, the tip of a smudge stick is lit over a ceremonial bowl or shell, which is then carried around the space to be cleansed while one gently blows on the embers. A feather is sometimes used to fan the smoke about. After smudging, the bundle is extinguished in the container with sand and saved for future use. Each stick is about 5” and is wrapped with naturally dyed organic thread.
