Buddhist Teacher Robert Aitken on the Art and Poetry of Zen
Robert Aitken (Aitken Roshi), an “American Zen” teacher who passed away in 2010, visited Bodhi Tree in 1994 to read passages from his books The Practice of Perfection: The Paramitas from a Zen Buddhist Perspective; Encouraging Words: Zen Buddhist Teachings for Western Students; and The Ground We Share: Everyday Practice, Buddhist and Christian (written with David Steindl-Rast, a Catholic Benedictine monk). Co-founder of the Buddhist Peace Fellowship, Aitken was extensively trained in the Japanese Zen tradition and encouraged his American students to study the art and poetry through which Zen has found its place in the East. In this recording, he makes unique expressions of Zen insight accessible to the Western reader.
