A non-toxic kit to create a hand-dyed scarf, in a choice of three colors
This dye-your-own-scarf kit features a stone-washed silk crepe de Chine scarf and a proprietary blend of non-toxic dyes and fixatives. By adding water to the kit in a glass jar, original artwork in the form of a hand-dyed scarf can be created at home. The glass jar is reusable, too.
Hand-dying is one of the oldest crafts, dating back thousands of years. Like any complex trade, the culture of the locale where It’s produced is reflected by the choice of materials and aesthetics in every work of art. This tradition has endured and still thrives in the modern era, thanks to artists like Shabd Simon-Alexander. She continually explores this art form, pushing its boundaries, forging a connection between past, present and future, and introducing it to people in a new light. Shabd supports her community by producing locally from her Brooklyn studio. All of her textiles are made of organic fibers. Silk scarf included.
Shabd Simon-Alexander is a textile artist, author, speaker and professor known for her expertise in hand dyeing, tie-dye, shibori and color theory. She has collaborated with fashion designers and artists for exhibits at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, PS1 and in the Whitney Biennial. Her current collection, built around concepts of sustainability and environmental stewardship, is produced in New York City’s garment district and features fabrics hand-dyed in her Brooklyn studio. She was also the first person to teach Martha Stewart how to tie-dye.
