A pair of 18k yellow gold studs with non-backed opals in a hand-fabricated setting
Set in 18 karat gold, these classically-composed studs feature naturally round milky opals. According to designer Tura Sugden, these studs were inspired by soft cashmere and fog-filtered light. We love opals for their soft creaminess and vibrant colors.
Opals are one of nature’s most precious stones, often containing every color in the rainbow, depending on the angle They’re viewed from. The play on light and color can captivate the imagination, and because of their close resemblance to the flecks in irises, They’re believed to heal eye ailments and bring good luck. Though soft, fragile and rather difficult to work with, the free flowing shape of these stones inspire creativity in jewelry designs for earrings, rings, necklaces and bracelets. Tura Sugden places them in handcrafted 18k yellow gold settings.
A classically trained fine artist with a BFA in Sculpture, Tura Sugden is a jewelry designer who makes unique and intricate settings that combine recycled gold, ethically sourced diamonds and natural stones. Every piece is produced by hand. As an apprentice, Tura Sugden learned to use a traditional German blowpipe for goldworking, which she still uses today. All of her pieces are inspired by light, shadow and the changing seasons of San Francisco.
