The annual Burning Man festival at Black Rock Desert in Nevada has been variously called an alternative community, pagan ritual (involving burning of a giant effigy), and post-modern theater. In this valuable contribution to understanding the nature of this large gathering, participant/observer Gilmore (religious studies and anthropology, California State U., Northridge), co-editor of AfterBurn: Reflections on the Burning Man Festival, offers insights on its history, participants, and practices. From an ethnographic study and online survey, she concludes that Burners are participating in “ritual without dogma.” The DVD offers video footage of the event taken by the author.
